Etiology of Congenital Scoliosis
نویسنده
چکیده
Congenital scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, resulting from disruption of normal vertebral development. Although there are many types of defects observed in congenital scoliosis, all result from abnormal formation and segmentation of the vertebral precursors, called somites. Developmental studies in animal models have identified many genes regulating somite formation and segmentation. The interaction of environmental factors and these genes, is thought to be disrupted resulting in deformities such as congenital scoliosis. A basic science research program and a large, multi-center clinical genetic study of congenital scoliosis and kyphosis have been established at our institution. Studying the developmental mechanisms in vertebral patterning may aid in the identification of some protective factors for normal spinal development, towards the prevention of disfiguring congenital scoliosis.

“Idiopathic scoliosis” defines a common and potential ly severe musculoskeletal disorder of unknown etiology, the diagnosis and treatment of which have been central in the development of orthopaedic surgery as a specialty. In its milder forms scoliosis may produce only trunk shape change, but when severe, can be markedly disfiguring as well as producing cardiac and pulmonary compromise (Fig. 18...

BACKGROUND The exact etiology of congenital scoliosis remains unknown as yet. It seems that its development may be influenced by both genetic predisposition and environmental factors, at varying degrees. International bibliography features few cases of monozygotic twins with congenital scoliosis. The aim of this study is to report a case in monozygotic twins and review the literature relating t...

Congenital scoliosis due to vertebral anomalies may occur in less than 0.1% of the population. Several different theories have been put forth in the literature to account for the etiology of congenital scoliosis and the vertebral anomalies which contribute to its development. The study of scoliosis in twins has contributed to the understanding of causative factors including genetics, environmen...

Congenital scoliosis represents a spinal malformation due to defects of formation, segmentation or mixed ones. It is characterized by a longitudinal and rotational imbalance. 54 patients were analyzed and 39 out of them were operated by various approaches with anterior and posterior instrumentations during 2000 and 2012. The impossibility to appoint some patients encountered in the daily practi...

INTRODUCTION: Scoliosis affects 2-4% of the population in the United States and unfortunately the most common treatment prior to bracing and surgery is no treatment at all. Scoliosis is a three dimensional deformity of the spine which includes lateral bending, rotation and in many instances flattening of the sagittal curves. Mechanical compression and distraction forces are known to modulate gr...
